CCSD Trustee Standards of Excellence
CCSD Trustee Standards of Excellence
The ABCPAC represents more than 100 years of collective school board experience and public service contributions. In conjunction with the National School Board Association and the Center for Public Education, we have established these Standards of Excellence to define the leadership required for the Clark County School District.
High-achieving boards focus relentlessly on improving student achievement. While individual talent is valuable, the most effective boards are those that prioritize professional development and work collaboratively to achieve their purpose. ABCPAC seeks and supports candidates who illustrate the ability to work at this elite level and possess a passionate commitment to the students of Clark County.
The Five Pillars of Board Effectiveness
Based on "The Key Work of School Boards" concept.
1. Vision
Effective school boards establish a clear vision with high expectations for quality teaching and learning that supports strong student outcomes.
2. Accountability
High academic standards, transparency, and accountability undergird a world-class education. True accountability depends on open decision-making, community engagement, and a receptivity to new ideas and constructive criticism.
3. Policy and Board Operations
Policy is how a board sustainably exercises power to serve students. Through policy, school boards establish a set of cohesive guidelines able to transform vision into reality.
4. Community Leadership
Through public advocacy and community engagement, school boards share their concerns and actions with the public. Community leadership that builds public support is vital to implement the board’s vision.
5. Board/Superintendent Relationships
The school board and the superintendent have essential leadership roles that are interconnected but different. Effective school boards lead as a united team with the superintendent, operating with strong collaboration and mutual trust.
Professional Standards for Individual Trustees
Effective boards are comprised of effective members. Trustees of the Clark County School District should:
- Operate with Integrity: Demonstrate the ability to work with professional integrity when dealing with staff and the public.
- Focus on the Mission: Maintain independence and objectivity while working as a cohesive team member focused on organizational goals.
- Understand the Role: Have a clear understanding of their specific role within the organization to ensure efficient governance.
- Accept Accountability: Be willing to hold themselves, the Board, and the Superintendent accountable for policy directives.
- Solve Problems Collectively: Exercise openness to collective problem-solving rather than pursuing individual agendas.
- Engage Stakeholders: Actively develop positive relationships with community partners who can assist in advancing student achievement.
- Exercise Fiscal Oversight: Maintain a thorough and responsible understanding of the district’s fiscal management.
- Avoid Micromanagement: Refrain from micromanaging daily operations or advocating for personal biases.
- Commit to the Office: Dedicate themselves to all responsibilities, including meeting preparation, consistent attendance, sub-committee participation, and ongoing professional development.
